"I will resign from my post if the high command directs me to do so," he told reporters on questioning him about former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa's efforts to return to the chief minister's gaddi.

Yeddyurappa, who is presently out on bail from jail, has openly stated that he wants to become the chief minister again. He had recently met top BJP leaders in Delhi and put forth his demand. Speculations are rife that he has asked Gowda not to resign as a Member of Parliament till January 5, as he hopes to clear all legal hurdles by then.

Gowda said he was confident of winning the crucial Legislative Council bypoll scheduled on December 22. "All the MLAs of the party are united. I have complete faith in my party MLAs," he stated.

The JD(S) is not likely to support the Congress in its effort to defeat Sadananda Gowda in the bypoll. The party supremo H D Deve Gowda wants his party MLAs to abstain from voting. For, he believes that Sadananda Gowda's defeat will indirectly benefit Yeddyurappa, sources said.
