A KSRTC driver has become role models for the younger generation by cultivating capsicum and a variety of chilly in the available land and reaping rich benefits at Shetrabeedi in Mudigere taluk.

He grows capsicum and a variety of chilly. B K Prabhakar, a resident of Shetrabeedi has been serving in KSRTC division as a driver. Along with his profession, he is also into farming activities. He owns one acre land at Hyaragudde, eight kilometres away from Mudigere town and has started growing capsicum and a variety of chilly.

“As a KSRTC driver, I have visited various places. I collect information on agriculture activities and implement the best practices of farming on my land. Accordingly, I have started growing capsicum and a variety of chilly which are found in abundance in Mysore and Nanjagoodu. As capsicum and chillies are used in fast food, there is great demand for the same,” he said.

About 6,000 chilly plants can be grown in one acre land. The expenditure incurred in growing is Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000. One can fetch three to four kg of chilly from each plant. There is market for capsicum and chillies in Chikmagalur and Mangalore and is sold for Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg.”

With the summer, ginger is grown all over in Malnad. The chemical fertilisers used in the cultivation of ginger has been affecting the fertility of the soil, he said.

“Growing chilly can be an alternative for the growers. After my first harvest, I have received what I have invested. With the next harvest, I would be able to reap profit,” said Prabhakar.

After harvesting paddy, many farmers leave their land as it is. Instead of leaving the field, one can grow chilly, and vegetables to become strong economically, he said.
