According to a press release by Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), the census will continue up to May 15. The fisheries census will collect different information related to marine fisher folk of the country, including the total number of marine fishermen, their crafts and gears, social-economic profile, demographic features and behavioural parameters.
As many as 2,100 enumerators have been trained by the scientists of CMFRI, employed for this exercise. They will visit 10.98 lakh fishermen spread across 4,050 fishing villages. The total expenditure involved is Rs 1.63 crore. This year’s fisheries census will include additional information like the attitude of the fisher folk towards fisheries regulations, awareness on climate change, extent of labour migration and perceived constraints and so on.
