Angry residents went berserk and ransacked Hitnal toll gate on National Highway 50 near here, after the staff reportedly didn’t co-operate in identifying the vehicle that had run over a cyclist on early Thursday morning.

Police have identified the deceased as Suresh Erappa Kumbara, 32, a resident of Hosahalli and a contract worker of Kirloskar factory.

On Thursday early morning, Suresh was on his way to work when a vehicle rammed his cycle near the toll gate. Such was the force that the vehicle dragged Suresh along with his cycle for over 50 meter, killing him on the spot. His body was severely mutilated, police said.

When residents who had gathered in large numbers approached the toll gate, owned by GMR company, for CCTV footage to identify the vehicle, the staff reportedly didn’t co-operate sparking the violence. The mob then thrashed the toll gate staff and destroyed monitors and computers. They also set fire to a tyre and refused to remove the victim’s body, police said.

Police, however, intervened and shifted the body. They also brought situation under control.Lack of service road and speed breakers on the NH is blamed for the accident.
