If the land allotted for Hopcoms outlet is given to set up Indira canteen, then it will be inevitable to approach the court, Hopcoms President Biddatanda Ramesh Chengappa warned.

Addressing media persons here on Thursday, he said that the Congress leaders have appealed to the district administration that the land allotted for Hopcoms is suitable to set up the canteen.

"Just because someone's land is good, can Indira canteen be set up there?" he questioned.

He said that the land (for Hopcoms outlet) was carefully chosen to help farmers and Bhoomipuja too has been performed at the site. At present, land levelling work is going on, Ramesh added.

There is no question of handing over the allotted site to set up Indira canteen, he said.

The land measurement is 36 cents and if needed, the canteen may be set up in the rear area which is vacant, he added.

Noting that the site was selected to help farmers of the district so that they can sell their homegrown produce directly to the consumers in a competitive price, Ramesh said that the then speaker K G Bopaiah had taken a lot of trouble to get the site.

"The land has been allotted to set up Hopcoms in 2010 and documents have been transferred and tax too has been paid to the CMC," he said and added that the same has been convened to the district administration.

He said that though a Rs 6.27 crore proposal had been sent to Karnataka Horticulture Federation (KHF) to strengthen the Hopcoms, it had not got the nod. Finally, a revised proposal of Rs 2.10 crore was sent and the same has been approved and a sum of Rs 1.45 crore has been released for the purpose, he explained.

Accordingly, all preparations have been done to construct the building and a sum of Rs 4.5 lakh has been already spent, Ramesh noted.

All the members have condemned the anti-farmer policy of the Congress, he said and alleged that a few are eying on the site after succumbing to traders' lobby.

Plans are on the anvil to store fruits and vegetables in large quantities after procuring them from the farmers and to process the same, he said and added that plans are also on the anvil to open outlets throughout the district to help farmers.

Members P S Satish, Nanjappa, Ponnappa, Mahesh and Secretary Reshma were present in the press meet.
