Meera C Saksena, Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) officiating chairperson, has said that police staff members should not play the role of mediators in civil disputes in rural areas.
She was speaking during a human rights awareness programme organised by the Karnataka Human Rights Panel at Town Hall on Wednesday.
“Some police staff and officials have been organising meetings between the parties involved in disputes related to land transactions. These types of cases should be dealt by courts. Among the complaints received by the State Human Rights Commission, it is found that 50% of human right violations is by police. The high-handed behaviour of police personnel during investigation is criticised. The accused are pressurised to give a false statement before the judge that they had not been harassed by the police, even though they had been treated badly. They are also made to hide the details of assault on them during medical examination,” said Saksena.
“The other 50% of human right violation cases are related to denial to fundamental rights as well as amenities such as food, water, wages, education and medical facilities,” she added.
