Condemning Delhi gang rape, members of the ABVP staged a protest, in Madikeri on Thursday.
The protesters took out a procession from Government PU College to the Deputy Commissioner’s office. The protesters urged the government to bring an act with tough punishment to rapists.
A memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner. ABVP convener Murugesh said that the accused in Delhi gang rape should be punished. There has been an increase in rape cases in the country in the recent years.
Expressing concern over the horrific incident, he demanded an effective law and stringent punishment to the guilty to prevent recurrence of such shameful incidents in the country.
ABVP leader Dhananjay said: “incidents of rape have made us hang our heads in shame. The Centre should convene a special session of Parliament to pass a stringent law to punish the accused.”
Somwarpet
Demanding a stringent law against atrocity on women, members of various organisations submitted a memorandum to Tahsildar K R Bhaskar in Somwarpet on Thursday.
The protesters said “a woman was allegedly raped by a few persons in Devarapura in Kodagu district recently. As the police failed in filing the charge sheet against the accused, they were not punished. There was a need to amend the existing laws, to punish the accused.”The protesters formed a human chain at Puttappa Circle.
Poor response
Bundh call evoked no response in Madikeri. Schools, colleges, government offices and business establishments functioned as usual. Vehicles services were normal. The students had asked political parties not to take part in the protest.
