Governor Vajubhai R Vala, on Wednesday, said the Raj Bhavan, the office of the governor, was not responsible for the delay in appointing vice-chancellors to state-run universities.
Speaking to reporters here, the governor said the government had not sent even a single proposal of eligible candidates for VCs posts, in order. Thus, the Raj Bhavan has rejected the proposals and has directed the government to resend the lists as per norms.
The governor said, "If the government had sent the proposal in order, I would have approved it within three days." Eight universities in the state have no permanent VCs at present.
When reporters asked him about the delay in the appointment of teaching faculty in the varsities, he said the governor had no role to play in the appointment of teaching faculty in the varsities.
"Every university has powers to fill vacancies for sanctioned posts and the governor's permission is not required for it. The varsities should obtain approval from the governor only when they need to appoint more staff than the sanctioned posts," he said.
"I don't know why the government has stopped the recruitment of staff in Davangere University," he said, in reply to a question.
When reporters said education was suffering in the state due to the lapses, Vala said, "Shoot one bullet at the government and two at me if education suffers".
