Savalagi residents threaten to boycott polls

Residents of Savalagi, a hobli centre in Jamkhandi taluk, have threatened to boycott the upcoming urban local body election and the Assembly poll that follows, if their hobli is not declared a taluk.

People in the hobli observed a bandh, called by the Taluk Horata Samiti (a committee formed to fight for the taluk status), on Sunday, to draw the attention of the government to their demand.

Business establishments remained closed in response to the bandh call and residents of villages across the hobli thronged the town to participate in the protest.

Savalagi, which is a major centre for the surrounding 23 villages, was a taluk centre when Jamkhandi was a province in the pre-British era, claimed members of the committee. Besides, the town has all the facilities required for a taluk, they said.
