A 50-year-old shepherd was killed by a crocodile at Tumakur village in the taluk on Tuesday.

The crocodile dragged the victim, Mareppa Hanamantha Idlur, into River Krishna when he was taking a bath. Mareppa’s friend, Honnappa, who was standing on the bank of the river, tried to save him by pulling him by the hand, but in vain.

Honnappa informed Mareppa’s family about the incident and they rushed to the spot. Expert divers and fishermen were called in to help retrieve the shepherd’s body. Forest and fire personnel have joined the efforts to trace the body. Police have registered a case.
