The unseasonal rains and sweltering heat have wrecked havoc on the mango yield in the taluk this year. The production has gone down by at least 50 per cent.
Several varieties of the fruit used to hit the market by February end and this year there is no sign of several varieties even by the end of May. The price of some have skyrocketed, with the Alfonso variety selling between Rs 700 and Rs 1,000 a kilo. Alfonso is known worldwide for its quality.
Mallika variety is predominantly grown in some parts of Kolar district and adjoining parts of Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the popular varieties in South India. Neelam, a native variety too has not made its dent on the market yet. Hailstorm during the initial stage has brought down the yield significantly.
