In Hassan district 268 farmers committed suicide. Bidar stands second with 196 farmers committing suicide in the district. Belgaum (191) and Chikmagalur (186) secure third and fourth positions respectively. The number of suicides in other districts are - Bagalkot - 65, Bangalore Rural - 50, Bangalore Urban - 2, Chamarajanagar - 18, Haveri - 108, Uttara Kannada - 50, Dharwad - 80, Koppal - 92, Mandya - 104, Raichur - 32, Tumkur - 122, Shimoga - 156, Kolar - 39, Mysore - 40, Udupi - 5, Kodagu - 85, Davangere - 112, Bellary - 91, Chitradurga 167, Gulbarga - 109, Bijapur - 124, Dakshina Kannada - 35, Gadag - 61, Ramanagar - 6, Chikballapur - 3 and Yadgir - 3.
CM intervened
Poet and nominated member in the Council Doddarange Gowda had to face severe criticism from the Opposition benches when he said corruption in administration began during the rule of Devraj Urs in the state. He was asked to pay a bribe of Rs 20,000 to become a lecturer in a government college. JD(S) M C Nanaiah, who was a minister in the Devraj Urs’
cabinet came down heavily on Gowda and said Urs was a champion of backward classes.
Chief Minister Yeddyurappa intervened to say that he had respect for Devraj Urs. Because of Urs people of backward classes got due representation in different fields.
