Take up terrace gardening, ZP chief tells people

Zilla Panchayat president Dinakar Babu has called upon people to take up terrace gardening and cultivate vegetables for daily use.

He was speaking at the Udupi district-level flower show and Farmers' Day programme organised by the district administration, the Zilla Panchayat, the Horticulture Department and the Udupi Jilla Krishika Samaja here on Saturday.

"Terrace gardening will not only supply the required quantity of vegetables to the house but also create an awareness on kitchen garden among children. The Horticulture Department trains people in terrace gardening," said the president.

The flower exhibition had a 'Shivalinga' designed using 3,100 roses and a five-foot-tall 'Nandi' prepared using 3,000 roses and gerberas.

Animals like elephant and tiger as well as butterflies were designed using orchids, lilies, marigolds, chrysanthemums and 1,000 alstroemerias. A variety of pulses, vegetables and fruits carved into various shapes was also displayed.

A demonstration on model terrace garden and exhibition of horticultural plants like black pepper, cashew, areca nut and tender coconut were also held. There will be a show on Mattu Gulla and Udupi Mallige.

Farmers Prakash Naik, Sripathi Bhat, Srinivas Bhat, Sripada Katte, Ganapayya Valthaje were honoured by the Krishika Samaja. Farmers Bharath Kumar, Gautham Hegde, Karunakar Shetty were conferred the taluk-level Krishika Award. Vijay Kumar, Ganesh Shetty and Rakesh Shetty, who have had success in dairy farming, Francis Mascarenhas in goat rearing and Gururaja Bhat for integrated farming were felicitated.

The flower expo will conclude on Monday.
