Villagers stage protest in front of Gram Panchayat office at Sulla village in Hubballi taluk on Monday.

Residents of Sulla village in the taluk locked Sulla Gram Panchayat office and staged a protest on Monday, alleging that rampant irregularities have taken place in the implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

"Fake documents are created in the name of dead persons, and MGNREGS wages are given. Job card is issued even in the name of an 80-year-old person," they charged.

Gram Sabhas are not being conducted, while government facilities are not being disbursed to eligible beneficiaries. Gram Panchayat elected representatives and officials are involved in this, protesters said.

Manjunath Katti, Mudukappa Mantur, Subhash Kondikoppa and others led the protest.

The protest was withdrawn after Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer Ramachandra Hosmani visited the spot, and assured to submit a report about the issue to the Zilla Panchayat chief executive officer.
