A 25-year-old wild jumbo died after being hit by the Hassan-Sakleshpur train, near Kakanamane village, under Bage grama panchayat limits, in the taluk, on Monday. This is the fourth elephant death reported in the region in the last three months.

The Forest department personnel said that the tusker might have been hit by the passenger train that was bound for Hassan from Sakleshpur.

They said that the elephant does not belong to the herd that was frequently spotted in Alur and Sakleshpur region. It might be a lone tusker that had strayed in search for a female elephant when it met with the mishap.
