The unit-II of the multi-crore Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) in Tamil Nadu is prepared for a criticality test next week.

The much expected commercial operations in the unit-II are all set to begin this year end.

As more than 98% of the physical progress work has been completed, the KNPP authorities on Wednesday told DH that the criticality test before commissioning will begin in the last week of June.

“We are ready to do the criticality test. However, we are yet to obtain written clearance from Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB),” a senior official from KNPP said. The fuel loading operations in the second unit was done in May 2016 after the pre-service inspection of equipment, said the official.
