With a touch of a finger on their smartphones, former prime minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur renewed their membership with the Congress, marking the start of party’s Internet-based membership drive.

The brief function took place at the former prime minister’s official residence on Monday morning. The Congress’s  baby steps into the virtual world to recruit members comes amid BJP claiming that it is the world’s largest political party with an 8.8-crore cadre strength, surpassing the Communist Party of China.

Asked to comment on the saffron party’s enrolment of 8.8 crore members, Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said: “BJP is only a missed call party”. Ahmed was referring to how a person only needs to give a missed call to a particular phone number to become a member of the BJP.
