Rajiv Mehrishi, who retired as the home secretary last month, on Monday took over as the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), succeeding Shashi Kant Sharma.

President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mehrishi (62), at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan attended by Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among other dignitaries.

A Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said Mehrishi will have a tenure till August 7, 2020.

A CAG has a tenure of six years or till the officer attains the age of 65, whichever is earlier. Sharma completed 65 years on September 24.

A 1978-batch Rajasthan cadre officer, Mehrishi was the economic affairs secretary before becoming the home secretary in August 2015.

Mehrishi holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow (UK) besides having a Master of Arts (MA) from Delhi University.
