In keeping with the July 3 deadline set by the government, telecom service providers will roll out the much-anticipated mobile number portability (MNP) system across the country from Friday.

MNP will allow customers to use their existing mobile number in any telecom circle across the country. The customer can also choose the operator without changing the number.

If an Airtel user in Bengaluru shifts to Vodafone service in Delhi, he/she can retain the Bengaluru number. At present, a subscriber is allowed to change the service provider while retaining the same number within his/her existing telecom circle. A subscriber in Delhi-NCR region can change service provider within the Delhi-NCR area only.

Several service providers, including Airtel, Vodafone, state-run BSNL and MTNL said they are ready to launch the service.
