The issue of protection to Indian Information Technology professionals (IT) working in the US did come up during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with American President Donald Trump in Washington DC last month, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

“There was an extensive discussion between the prime minister and the US president on the issue, albeit without using the word H1B visa,” Sushma said, countering the Opposition MPs allegation that Modi had not raised the issue during his discussion with Trump at the White House last month.

“I am proud to say that the prime minister was able to make President Trump agree that Indian skilled professionals are contributing greatly to the US economy,” said Sushma.

The Modi-Trump meeting on June 26 was the first between the two leaders after the new administration took office in Washington DC in January.

Trump’s anti-immigrant campaign pitch during the US presidential elections last year as well as his “America First” rhetoric and promise to protect jobs for the Americans over the past five months fuelled speculation that some of the policies of his administration could hit India’s IT industry hard.
