Odisha’s state health department has ordered an inquiry into the death of an infant girl in coastal Nayagarh district allegedly after she was given polio and other vaccinations.

Eleven other children have also taken ill after the vaccination. “The chief district medical officer (CDMO) of Nayagarh has been directed to conduct an inquiry into the matter and submit a report”, a senior health department official said on Thursday.

Reports from Nayagarh district suggest that health workers at Ranpur block administered polio and hepatitis B vaccines to children in Balabhadrapur village falling under the block on Wednesday as part of a special vaccination drive launched by the district administration.

After receiving the vaccinations, 12 children developed symptoms of illness. They were rushed by their parents to the Ranpur block headquarters hospital, where one of them, an infant girl, was declared dead. The other children were moved to the government hospital in district headquarters of Nayagarh.
