Panel to review recruitment of teachers

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry on Friday initiated a move to formulate a policy for selection and retention of “meritorious” teachers in the higher educational institutions.

In view of the acute shortage of teachers in the universities and colleges, the Ministry set up a 7-member committee to suggest measures to attract qualified and talented teachers.  The committee has been asked to submit its report within two months.

The panel, to be headed by former University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Arun Nigavekar, will suggest the yardstick for evaluation of the PhD degrees of aspirants for selection as teachers. It would also advise what should be the parameters to select assistant professors from the list of those qualifying the national eligibility test conducted for the purpose.
