Two days after the NDA government's launch of digital locker facility, a PIL has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the move to link it to Aadhaar card.
An RTI activist urged the court to quash the order making “Aadhaar” mandatory for availing the dedicated personals storage service.
As part of an initiative under Digital India programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on July 1 launched the digital locker facility – linked to Aadhaar cards – to help citizens to digitally store their important documents like PAN card, passport, mark sheets and degree certificates.
It is aimed to help people by eliminating the use of physical documents and in sharing verified electronic documents across government agencies.
Gurgaon-resident Sudhir Yadav contended that the government's insistence of Aadhaar cards was in violation of the Supreme Court’s September 23, 2013, order as well as fundamental right to equality guaranteed under the Constitution.
The interested people could be deprived of the facility by the government's decision, he claimed in the petition filed on Friday.
Acting on a set of petitions, including the one filed by former judge Justice K S Puttaswamy, the apex court had observed: “No person should suffer for not getting the Aadhaar card in spite of the fact that some authority had issued a circular making it mandatory and when any person applies to get the Aadhaar Card voluntarily, it may be checked whether that person is entitled for it under the law and it should not be given to any illegal immigrant.”
