A unique social media campaign is taking shape. Dalits in Gujarat are posting pictures of themselves twirling their moustaches as a gesture of as an expression of protest opposition to rising atrocities against the minority community.

The genesis of the protest follows incidents on September 25 and September 29 at Limbodara village in Kalol taluka of Gandhinagar district, where two Dalit men were allegedly beaten up by members of the Rajput community for “sporting moustaches,”  in two separate incidents.

Soon, hashtags such as #RightToMoustache, posted alongside the moustache twirling selfies began pouring out in support of Piyush Parmar, one of the victims thrashed in Gujarat. Another hashtag “Jaativad Murdabad” (meaning down with casteism) was also trending. Here are some of the photos:
