Security was beefed up around the house of Atia Sabri, who had taken the issue of triple talaq to the Supreme Court, in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur town, about 500 km from here, after the apex court judgement termed the practice "unconstitutional".

Police here said on Tuesday that security had been beefed up at Atia's house in Teliwala Chowk locality in the town as a precautionary measure. "We do not want to take any chance. Additional security personnel have been deployed around the house," said a senior police officer here.

Atia, who was married in 2012 to Wazid Ali, a resident of Haridwar in Uttarakhand had been divorced by her husband through triple talaq. She claimed that she was divorced as she had failed to give birth to a male child as desired by her husband and in-laws.

Atia, who has two daughters, left for Delhi on Tuesday morning to be at the Supreme Court.

Atia had approached the Dalrul Uloom at Deoband, a prestigious Islamic seminary in Saharanpur district, but it did not listen to her side of the story and said that the divorce was in accordance with the 'Shariat' (Islamic Law).

Atia's in-laws and husband also tried to implicate her in a false case apparently to force her to withdraw her petition from the apex court, but she remained undeterred.

Her in-laws and husband also tried to kill her by poisoning her but she somehow survived and later lodged a police complaint against them. They were later arrested and sent to jail after a non-bailable warrant was issued against them by a court in Uttarakhand.
