Tamil Nadu police on Wednesday arrested a Bengaluru-based woman on the charges of cheating several elderly citizens including indulging in chain snatching activities in the city.

Police said Asha Soundarya (37) hailing from Lingarajapuram in Bengaluru escaped to Chennai on her two-wheeler couple of months back to evade arrest in her State after having involved in several robbery cases there.

Following a complaint from a senior citizen and acting on a tip-off, police detained Asha at T-Nagar area in the city.

Initial investigation revealed that Asha, who was staying in a room at Arumbakkam area, involved in chain snatching and robbing elderly persons in a busy location like T-Nagar, Kodambakkam and Nungambakkam areas in the city.

Police also recovered about 15 grams of gold jewels from the accused. Investigations also revealed that soon after she lost her husband two years back in a road accident, Asha started indulging in small crimes at Bengaluru till local police warned to book her under Goondas Act.

Therefore, fearing arrest, Asha fled to Chennai and continued with her criminal activities. Asha was lodged in Puzhal prison.
