The Haryana Police on Thursday claimed a major breakthrough with the arrest of two people in the multi-crore heist at the Punjab National Bank, Gohana, in Sonipat district on Saturday night.

The burglars had dug a 150-foot long tunnel straight up to the locker room and decamped with gold and valuables worth millions. The police have recovered 10 kg of gold and silver items from two accused, Balraj and Surinder.

They are residents of village Katwal in Sonipat. Police sources said the accused have confessed to the crime saying that the idea to dig a tunnel to loot the bank came from a movie.  While the main accused is still at large, another suspect in the case from whose house the tunnel work began has committed suicide.

The police said the gold and silver ornaments were recovered from a bag hidden in a brick kiln in a nearby village. The police are on the lookout for the other suspects, Satish and Rajesh.  The Sonipat police have also booked the bank staff for negligence.
