In a shocking incident, a youth allegedly chopped off one of the arms of a 14-year old girl in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur-Kheri district, about 150 kilometres from here, on Wednesday.

According to the police sources the alleged culprit, identified as Rohit Kumar, barged into the house of Sanjana (name changed), a resident of Fattepur Saidhari locality, and forcibly took the minor girl to the nearby Mahewaganj Road.

Rohit, who carried a sword, repeatedly hit Sanjana with it severing one of her arms even as a large number of passers by remained mute spectators, according to the eye witness accounts.

The victim, who lay on the road writhing in pain, was rushed to the district hospital from where she was referred to the Trauma Centre at the KG Medical College in the state capital in a critical condition, sources said.

Rohit, who tried to flee from the spot after perpetrating the crime, was caught by the people. He was thrashed by the crowd before being handed over to the police.

Sanjana's mother said that Rohit used to sit for hours at a hotel, which was situated very close to her house. ''He used to stalk Sanjana also,'' she said.

Senior police officials, who visited the district hospital and made arrangements to shift her to the state capital, said that it could be a case of one sided love.

''It seems Rohit was very angry with the girl....she may have spurned his advances,'' said a senior police official in Lakhimpur-Kheri.

A case was registered and investigations were on, the police added.
