London Olympics bronze-medallist MC Mary Kom led the charge as six Indian boxers stormed into the final with comprehensive wins in the first session of semifinals in the 12th South Asian Games here on Sunday.
In the men’s competition, L Devendro Singh (49kg) started the proceedings when he beat Thiwana Ranasinghe in the 49kg. Shiva Thapa (56kg) had the height disadvantage against Mohammad Ohiduzzaman of Bangladesh but the Indian did well to defend himself before landing powerful jabs.
Triathletes impress
India bagged the top spot in the triathlon mixed relay team event and swept the gold medals in the discipline here.
The Indian team of Pallavi Retiwala, Dilip Kumar, Thoudam Sarojini Devi and Dhiraj Sawant won the gold with a combined timing of 1:24:31 on the final day of competitions.
Purva shines
In taekwondo, India managed just one gold, two silver and a bronze. Purva Dixit beat Nepal’s YK Chaulagain in the women’s 49 kg category to win the solitary yellow metal in taekwondo. Gajendra Parihar went down to Afghanistan’s Mahmood Haidari in the men’s 58 kg final to settle for the silver. India’s bagged the second silver of the day in men’s 74 kg as Manu George lost to another Afghan M Sharif Muradi in the final.
Indians in handball final
The Indian men and women’s teams entered the finals of the handball event.
In the men’s semifinal, India outplayed Nepal 51-23 while in the women’s last four clash, the hosts drubbed Pakistan 44-23.
