Hurdlers Ashwini Akkunji and Siddanth Thingalaya bowed out in the first round of their respective events as Indian athletes continued their poor performance at the Commonwealth Games here.

Ashwini, making a comeback after a doping ban, finished fifth in her first round heat of the 400M hurdles, clocking 58.75 seconds. Ashwini had a season’s best of 57.43 seconds heading to Glasgow. Even a matching effort would not have gained her an entry to the final, with the last qualifying spot being taken by Canada’s Chanice Chase at 57.23 seconds.

Thingalaya, with a best of 13.84 this season, came third in his heat in the 110M hurdles, clocking 13.93 seconds. He was placed 12th overall.

On Monday, Sharadha Narayana failed to qualify for the women’s 100 metres final. The 27-year-old finished sixth in the semifinal, clocking 11.71 seconds to crash out.

Om Prakash Singh had finished a poor sixth in the men’s shot put final while M R Poovamma had crashed out at the semifinal stage of the women’s 400 metres both unable to come close to their personal bests or season’s best performances.
