The fisheries ministry said one kilogram of young launce fish caught near Kitaibaraki town in Ibaraki prefecture contained 526 bequerels of radioactive cesium, at least 500 bequerels more than the legal limit, and 1,700 bequerels of iodine, RIA Novosti reported citing Kyodo news agency.

Authorities have urged people to stop eating fish, while fisheries minister Michihiko Kano said the government would toughen inspection of marine products caught in the area.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company has been struggling to contain the flow of highly contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean.
