In contrast, 78 per cent of the people in news are men in the Indian media and 76 per cent worldwide, GMMP said in its National report pertaining to India.

GMMP is the world's largest-running and most extensive research on gender in the news media and India was one of the 108 countries across the world which was monitored.

The percentage women heard or read about in print, radio and television news in Asia was 20 per cent, the report said.

GMMP which carries out similar study every five years said there is a significant improvement since 1995 when globally only 17 per cent of the people in the news were women.

"This is the first time monitoring of Indian media was done and was carried out by the Network of Women in Media, India (NWMI), a professional association linking women journalists and other women working in or on the media across the country for the GMMP," veteran journalist and activist Kalpana Sharma told reporters today.

The national report was released by the Additional Chief Secretary Chandra Iyengar at the Press Club of Mumbai.
