Dear Sir,

I am a final year Engineering student. I would like more information on scholarships available for an MS or MTech degree overseas.

Aryan

Dear Aryan,

Financial assistance by way of scholarship, assistantship, fee waiver is hard to come by these days. The student population and unemployed professionals in India have increased tremendously. It does not mean that financial assistance is not available. For starters, you must have an exceptionally high score in Engineering. Your involvement with projects matters a lot. Finally, GRE and TOEFL scores must be high. If you have work experience as a teacher, you may take up teaching for undergraduates at the university. Apart from the university, there are other sources too. Browse the following websites for more information. www.finaid.org, www.nafsa.org, www.fulbright-india.org, www.fulbrightonline.org, www.IEFA.org, www.fordfound.org. Also, there are some Indian sources such as Tata Endowment: www.tata.com, Agha Khan Foundation: www.akdn.org. Contact Indian nationalised banks that offer soft loans for higher education with liberal repayment schemes.

Dear Sir,

I have a second class degree in Engineering (E&C). I would like to pursue higher studies abroad. Please provide valuable, detailed information. What is the eligibility criteria for admission in a university abroad (for a technical degree)? What are the other requirements?

Sri

Dear Sri,

Your aggregate score is perhaps low to get into a Master’s programme abroad in a good university. Your admission depends on your choice of country and university. Start preparing for GRE, TOEFL or IELTS. Get involved in a project and get some work experience in the field you want to specialise in. A strong Statement of Purpose proving that you wish to specialise in a particular field is important. There are universities in USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore that offer courses in your area. The process of application is elaborate and the tuition fee is a lot higher than in India.

Dear Sir,

I am in Class 10 under CBSE board. I am interested in Aeronautical Engineering. What subjects should I take after I PUC? I also want to pursue higher education in the US. I am interested in studying Automobile, Civil and Mechanical Engineering abroad.

Afnan Parker

Dear Afnan,

You have mentioned Aeronautical, Automobile, Mechanical and Civil — which are all different streams of Engineering. You may take up Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and either Electronics or Computer Science. Studying these subjects under the Central Board is preferred over State Board. To study in the US, you need to give SAT 1 (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and SAT 2 and TOEFL, for language proficiency.

Dear Sir,

I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics & Communication and I intend to pursue an MSc in Physics at a foreign university. Which are the exams to give? How do I prepare myself?

Dear student,

I am assuming that you are interested in Physics as a science, not Applied Physics as in Engineering. So far, you have been exposed to Applied Physics in Engineering, specifically Electronics. You may have to do a bridge course in Physics as a science. The course will depend on the country and university you choose. I suggest that you give GRE and pursue an MS in the US. You may take up additional physics-related subjects too as electives or ancillary subjects. To study in the US, you need a GRE and TOEFL score.
