Port handles large gas carrier

According to a press release, the vessel berthed at Berth No 12 for evacuation of the entire consignment meant for distribution in the State.

This is the largest size of LPG vessel ever handled at the Port. The entire consignment has been brought as coastal movement from Sikka Port in Gujarat, for M/s Total Oil India, a subsidiary of Total France.

New Mangalore Port is the No 1 Port in handling LPG in the country.

The Port has handled a record quantity of 1.63 million tonnes of LPG during 2009-10 as against 1.56 million tonnes handled in previous year.

The current year also shows upward trend by handling 1.38 million tonnes of LPG during 2010-11 (Upto December 2010) as against 1.22 million tonnes handled during the corresponding period of last year with a growth of 12.97 per cent.

NMPT Chairman P Tamilvanan said that the NMPT could achieve this landmark by permitting Total Oil India to intall LPG handling facilities at Berth No 12 on January 25, 2009.

Large parcel size of LPG vessels (LGCs) will be handled at this berth and even VLCs (Very Large Gas Carriers) with a carrying capacity of 40,000 plus are expected to handle at NMPT in the future days.
