The election was just a formality, as the Congress and the JD(S) had not fielded their candidates for the post.
Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah questioned the propriety of holding the election for the post of Deputy Speaker when petitions challenging the disqualification of 16 legislators were pending in the courts. He said it would amount to curbing the rights of the disqualified MLAs. Speaker K G Bopaiah defended the move, stating the election could not be postponed as the process had already begun.
After the election, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa and Siddaramaiah congratulated Bhat, who represents the Mangalore (South) Assembly constituency.
