'Media should be conscious keepers of society'

Speaking on the topic “Contempt of court in judiciary and media,” he said that there is a ground of terror in the mind of journalists that they can be charged for contempt in case they speak about the judiciary system. Contempt is a moral principle and it holds good only when one tries to lower the dignity of the judiciary, said Justice Saldanha and added that judges are human beings and even they are prone to  do mistakes.

“The overall conviction rate of criminal cases in India is 4 per cent and the margin of error in foreign judiciary is 2 to 3 per cent, but in India, it is above 90 per cent,” said Justice Saldanha.

If you want to be true to your profession, then do your duty regardless of consequences, advised Saldanha to the media persons.

“We had a platform to see bi-polar views in the same forum come to common agreeable terms. As far as the students are concerned, the seminar helped a lot in understanding the changing trends of media in various areas,” said Media Manthan Student Convenor Harsha Raj Gatty speaking to Deccan Herald.

“The two-day media seminar had 4 sessions with 15 media experts expressing their views. We could not cancel the seminar because of the bundh because the resource persons had already come and most of all the students wanted to go on with the seminar,” said St Aloysius College  Mass Communication Department Head Fr Richard Rego.
