Major Laishram Jyotin Singh, who fought with the terrorist with bare-hands to save 10 of his colleagues, was selected for displaying exemplary courage, grit, selflessness and valour in the face of a terrorist attack, said a spokesperson from the Defence Ministry.

Being one of the best medical officers in the Army, Jyotin was deputed for the Indian medical mission in Kabul on February 13 to look after patients coming to the Indian mission hospital in Kabul. But everything changed 13 days later.

On that fateful morning of February 26, Noor guesthouse, a guarded residential compound in Kabul, was suddenly attacked by heavily armed suicide bombers. They exploded a vehicle rigged with approximately 500 kg of explosive at the boundary wall and enter the premise.

On hearing shouts of the five officers, Jyotin crawled out from under the debris of his room and charged at the terrorist with bare hands.

In a flash, Jyotin pinned the terrorist down and grabbed his arms to ensure that the terrorist could no longer lob any grenade or use his AK-47 rifle.
