Bangalore Rural SP Dr B A Mahesh told reporters on Tuesday that Karthik, after quitting his job as an executive in ICICI Bank, availed loans from various sources. Earlier, while working at Kanva garment factory in Nelamangala, he introduced himself as a bank employee to Kavitha who in turn introduced him to Premalatha.

He took Kavitha on a bike to Devarayanadurga Hills on December 16, 2010. A heated argument ensued over Karthik getting close to Premalatha. Karthik garroted her, took her jewellery and bludgeoned her to death.

Kavitha was married to Manjunath eight years ago and they had a six-year-old daughter. “She hailed from Tumkur district. Kavitha and Manjunath stayed in Nelamangala, while I stayed in Bangalore. I went to meet them in the third week of December and she had been missing for five days. I filed a police complaint,” Vanajakshamma, Kavitha’s mother-in-law, told Deccan Herald. The police found Kavitha’s body in Devarayanadurga and Vanajakshamma confirmed its identity.

Karthik then promised Premalatha that he would help her get loans from a bank and asked her to come with him wearing all her jewellery. She also wore her sister’s jewellery. He took her to a desolate place in Shivagange Hills on December 24, 2010 and bludgeoned her to death. He took her jewellery and fled. A missing complaint was lodged on December 29.

Premalatha was married to Rajanna, a private factory employee, six years ago.

Nelamangala Circle Inspector B R Yathiraj took up the investigation of both the cases. “Karthik’s phone call details gave us vital clues. We arrested him from his sister’s house in Yelahanka New Town,” Yathiraj told Deccan Herald.
