Man held for attack on woman inside train

The woman was attacked between Vallathol Nagar and Kalamandalam stations just as the train was nearing its destination Shoranur. It was Charlie’s physical handicap — his left palm was severed — that helped some passengers sitting in the next compartment to take note of his sudden entry and exit.

The man was caught late in the night by the railway police team from Shoranur.  Though he initially denied having attacked the girl, some passengers who were called in late in the night identified him.

Meanwhile, the woman is still battling for her life and has been given ventilator support at the Thrissur Medical College Hospital where she was admitted to.

According to police, the man had attacked the girl in the deserted women’s compartment as the train was nearing its destination. She had tried to free herself from his grip and come to the doorway. However, the man pushed her out and also followed her as the train was slowing down.

Though the woman apparently got injured when she fell, the man is believed to have further hit her with a stone, dragged her away and raped her. She was discovered lying half-naked by some people much later.

The police said investigations had revealed that Charlie had a criminal background.
