Food poisoning at marriage function claims one life

55 persons have been hospitalised, condition of 2 critical

The deceased has been identified as Krishnappa (45) of Bane, who had fallen ill after consuming the food at Manasa Hall three days ago. Krishnappa had died on the way when he was being taken to Mysore for advanced treatment. Aggrieved people staged protest by closing shops and establishments in the town. They also organised protest in front of the Government Hospital morgue, where Krishnappa’s body was kept. The protesters were successful in making the caterers distribute compensation to the kin of the died and all others, who fell ill after consuming the food at the marriage ceremony.

People from various parts gathered in front the morgue as soon as the news was spread. They demanded the police to arrest the owner of the hall. Shops in Somwarpet town remained closed for nearly one hour. As violent situation prevailed in the town, the owner of the hall reportedly spoke to DySP Jayaprakash over phone and agreed to pay Rs two lakh as compensation to the kin of Krishnappa. Similarly, he also has agreed to pay Rs 3,000 each to people, who are hospitalised due to food poisoning.

However, the protesters demanded that Rs 10 lakh should be given to the kin of Krishnappa and those who are in hospital should be given Rs 10,000 each.

55 in hospital

As many as 55 persons were hospitalised due to illness after consuming the food at the hall. A person, who was suffering from renal ailment, was shifted to Mysore for advanced treatment. Remaining 54 persons are recuperating in the Government Hospital, informed doctors. Meanwhile, 11 people, who ate food in the programme, are hospitalised in Virajpet. Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah visited the hospital and met the patients. 

While Ganesh (31) and Purushu (28) were kept in the intensive care unit as their condition is said to be critical, Betoli gram panchayat member A S Mahesh is under close observation, doctors informed.
