Inscription unearthed in Belthangady

According to epigraphist Dr Y Umanath Shenoy, the inscription was scripted by Ramadevi, a lady belonging to the Ajila royal family which ruled Venoor during 1430-1460.

There are 22 lines engraved. The scripture begins with a symbol of a ‘Shivling’ right at the top of the inscription. There is a lamp engraved on one side of the Shivling and emblem of Vijayanagar empire on the other side. There are symbols of sun and moon above all the symbols.

The inscription talks of how a vast area of paddy cultivation land has been devoted for Suryanarayana temple so that the yield can be utilised to offer ‘naivedyam’ to the presiding diet of the temple. Dr Shenoy said that another inscription scripted by ruler Ramadevi on the same day can be seen near Aladangadi Basadi.
