Open Fide rated chess tourney begins

Speaking at the ‘Indian Overseas Bank 5th Mangalore International Open Fide rating Chess Tournament -2011’ here on Saturday, he said Mangalore has started a movement in chess by holding various tournaments. The trend should be continued. Players from various parts of the country take part in the tournament, making it a success.

Comparing the chess with banking sector, Indian Overseas Bank Mangalore zone senior Regional Manager K Anil said that just like the way a right move at the right time helps one to succeed in chess, the banking sector too follows the same theory. “Chess is a game which needs concentration, focus and perseverance,” he said.

Grand Master Parveen Thipsay who had taken part in the last four tournaments was felicitated on the occasion. In fact, Thipsay had won twice in the tournament in Mangalore.
Karnataka Bank Chairman Jayaram Bhat, United Karnataka Chess Association Honorary President Prof M B Puranik, Secretary V Raghavendra were chief guests.

In his introductory speech, DK district Chess Association former president M S Gururaj said with the chess tournaments in Mangalore, chess has seen progress in the district. Over 40 players from the district have received Fide ratings.

The tournament that began on Saturday will conclude on July 23. As many as 421 players including three grand masters, 21 international masters and a woman grand master are taking part in the tournament.

The tournament was inaugurated by moving the pawns by M R Vasudeva and Sikkim state Human Rights Commission President Ajaynath Roy.
