UG overseas? Expensive!

Studying abroad
Last Updated 12 October 2011, 11:39 IST

Dear Sir,
I have passed Class 12 with 84.6 per cent under CBSE Board. I wish to do my further studies in the US. But I have neither taken the SAT nor the TOEFL. A lecturer suggested that I complete graduation in India as the cost of education is high in the US. Am I eligible for scholarships such as Inlaks Foundation, BPCL scholarships? Please advise.
Student

Dear Student,
There is nothing wrong in aspiring to study in the USA, which is the preferred destination for most students as USA offers a variety of courses and there is a lot of flexibility in their education system. I see that you seem to have thought about this option very late. It takes at least 8 to 12 months for the application process and preparation. SAT 1 and TOEFL are mandatory for entry to any university at the undergraduate level. Getting financial assistance even if you are a topper is next to impossible. It is not that there are no charitable organisations that offer scholarships, but it is highly competitive and the procedure is arduous. Moreover,  the aspirants are worldwide. Your lecturer is right in suggesting that you go through an undergraduate education of your choice here in India, which is second to none at this level. Stay focused and be clear as to which stream you want to pursue. Pursue any stream of education that takes four years for graduation as USA requires 16 years of education for entry to a Master’s programme. Maintain a high level of performance right from the beginning and keep exploring available opportunities so that you stand a better chance of getting financial assistance for the Master’s programme. Good luck.

Dear Sir,
I’m a third year engineering student. My chosen branch is Electronics and Communication. What is the difference between an MTech and MS, apart from the fact that an MS is a degree awarded overseas? If I decide to study abroad, how expensive will it be? When should I start preparing for entrance tests?
Chaitra S

Dear Chaitra,
There is no difference between an MTech and an MS. You are right in understanding that here in India most institutions call it MTech and ME where as in most universities abroad, it is called an MS. In India you have to crack GATE and PGCET to get into a Master’s programme in IIT, IISc and state engineering colleges. All over the world it is only USA that insists on a GRE score where as all other countries offer admission based on your performance at graduation and English language proficiency test such as IELTS or TOEFL. You need a minimum of eight months to a year for the entire process, culminating in getting your admission letter. Most MS programmes can cost a minimum of Rs 8 lakhs up to Rs 15 lakhs for tuition fees and living expenditure, per year, depending on the country of choice.
