'e-learning is ideal for self-learning'

Education is not possible only by technology. Humanbeings are required to drive and enhance quality and standard of learning, said Goa University former vice-chancellor Prof B S Sonde.

Speaking at a technical session at the fourth convention of Karnataka Science and Technology Academy organised at Mangalore University here on Sunday, he said pool of trained experts are needed in large number to enhance quality of learning.

“Science education is essential to give students a proper perspective of the impact of science on everyday life. Science education needs expert teachers in large number to motivate the students and also calls for adequate laboratory,” he stressed.

Prof Sonde said it will not be able to use the conventional method of teaching for a large number of youth in the country in the future. Hence, e-learning will minimise the need of large number of teachers and reduce the mediocrity. e-learning is ideal for self-learning, he added.  He said e-learning is basis for open and distance learning (ODL) leading to high quality of education at all levels on a massive scale. In e-learning, the teachers are not replaced but are given a separate role.  Prof Sode said through e-learning uniform learning of any subject at any pace and any level by all students is facilitated by learning materials. In fact, e-learning uses experts and gifted teachers to prepare learning materials.

Speaking after honouring Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankaramurthy, ISRO former chairman and Karnataka Science and Technology Academy Chairman Prof U R Rao said Dakshina Kannada is known for quality education. The convention has given ideas as to how to develop interest in science and technology.

There were also sessions on fisheries sector in coastal districts, coastal zone management, change in weather pattern and others.
