Shufflr brings popular videos closer to you

Last Updated 02 March 2012, 08:45 IST

Imagine getting access to videos from all over the web, even the social networking sites at one place without any hassles of browsing individual sites, searching for your preferred ones

Althea Systems, a June 2009 startup is the case in point. The company has one very simple objective, to get videos that matter to you. This made them develop Shufflr, an app that aggregates videos from sites like Youtube, Metacafe and also gathers them from your social networking sites and blogs.

“We only gather videos that are made public and the user can play them in the site of the content creator, thus not hurting copyright issues,” says Althea CEO & co-founder Kishore A K.

The startup got two investments; one from Angel Investors from India and Silicon Valley and another of $3 million from Intel Capital in 2010.

At present, Kishore said that they are not focusing on any revenue model, at present. However they are planning to roll out an advertisement-led revenue programme in the next few months. One among them would be to advertise on the inventory space on their website.

“Streaming premium content would be another source of income in the future; we are just in the planning stage for such models,” added Kishore.

Android apps

The company has already launched android apps and iPhone app and the iPad app is coming next week. It reached one million active users for Feb 2012 and the bulk of them are from US, UK, Taiwan, Malaysia and Turkey.

To reap Shufflr benefits, one has either to download their PC browser or install their app on smartphones and register with it. This will give him a daily video feed according to relevance, just like Google News delivers customised section-wise news.

“Imagine getting your videos every morning like your daily newspaper. That is what we are delivering through Shufflr,” explained Kishore.
