MCC plans multi-level lots, exclusive policy

Last Updated 09 March 2012, 16:52 IST

Multi-level parking lots is the only solution, with Mysore City Corporation (MCC) too having plans to go for it. According to the proposals put forth by MCC, such lots are identified to come up at Town Hall premises, Gaadi Chowka in Nanjumalige and also opposite KSRTC sub-urban bus stand on Bangalore- Nilgiri road.

Similar proposal by Zoo at the existing parking lot opposite the menagerie is learnt to have been shelved. In addition to this, the city corporation in July last had resolved in the council meeting to come out with a parking policy.

Most importantly, the policy strongly advocates for pay and park. According to the policy the roads in the city will be classified as heritage core, A, B and C and on street and off street basis. In the first- the heritage core only pedestrians and non-motor vehicles will be allowed.

In the A zone- where only roads with free flow of traffic will be identified, parking space will be created after ensuring adequate space for vehicles and pedestrians. Here the toll for parking and rules will be very strict. In the case of C, where less used roads will be identified- there will be slight relaxation in rules and fee. In the case of B, the rules and fine will be in between A and C. The policy also stresses on making maximum use of the space available near government offices, hotels and also malls during the off-peak hours to accommodate the vehicles of others. The off-street parking here means- multi-level parking lots.

Operation cellar

Another much talked about yet to be initiated action by the civic body is operation cellar.

According to an estimate by the city corporation itself, nearly 226 commercial buildings were found violating the set rules in the building plans. The afore said buildings owners  had rented out the cellar space earmarked for parking, for other purposes. When the councillors had raised a hue and cry against the same, the commissioner K  S Raykar had informed the council about the intended plans to launch the operation from temple road in V V Mohalla. What remains to be seen is will this operation really happen?
