The caste system can not be eradicated without changing the mindset of the people. It can be eradicated only through a slow and continuous process, said Hampi University Professor B M Puttaiah.

He was speaking at a conference on ‘building caste free society’ organised by Karnataka Raitha Sangha and Akhila Bharatha Kranthikari Mahila Sanghatane at Ambedkar Bhavan in Chikmagalur on Saturday.

Describing the various angles of caste system, he said that the feeling of discrimination is one of the basic trait of human beings. Power social status and inequality at times leads to the formation of new caste. Those who expect social gain and power do not support fight against caste system.

Those who have been on the receiving end due to casteism support the fight against the evil, said Puttaiah.
Meanwhile, he said that psychological change is must for bringing social change.

“Caste system is filled with inequality and injustice. There is no point in calling casteism as a system or a process, rather it is an evil. Similarly it is not right to claim that only Brahmins harass in the name of casteism.
