It was not a satisfactory result for Karnataka in the UPSC examinations this year as the highest rank secured by the State is 91.

However, children of those already in the service made news with Suhas C, son of IFS officer C K Shivanna topping the State. Deepthi I Perumal (Rank 273), daughter of IAS officer I R Perumal, and Shreyas G Hosur (532), son of IPS officer Gopal B Hosur, too cleared the exams.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, an elated Suhas said he did not expect such a good result.

The engineering graduate said he started preparing for the UPSC in 2009, as soon as he completed engineering.

“My father encouraged me and my subjects anthropology and public administration required a lot of analysis. The interview board was very cordial with me,” he said. This was Suhas’s first attempt at the examinations and he did not take up job offers or admissions at universities abroad in order to concentrate on the exam completely.

Maj Siddalingayya Hiremath gave a shot at the KAS and succeeded in it too. Taking Kannada Literature and Public Administration, he has sailed into the UPSC as well with rank 315. “It needs a lot of determination and a lot of people helped me,” Hiremath, who is currently an Assistant Commissioner at Bailhongal, said.

Nadig Vishwas (378) quit his engineering job in 2010, as he wanted to work with people and his job as an engineer did not satisfy him. “Besides, my dad inspired me a lot to go ahead with this,” he said.

Pradeep S (343) took up UPSC with a deep sense of responsibility and with an urge to work on developmental issues, especially drinking water and sanitation. A native of Udupi, Pradeep plans to write the exams again.

Shreyas G Hosur (532) was extremely happy just figuring on the list, but said he wanted to write again. “Personally, I would like to get into the IPS. Obviously, my father has been a huge source of inspiration. The exposure to the services drives most of us into this field,” he said. Shreyas, who took Public Administration and Geography, is another engineering graduate who promptly chose civil services after he graduated. Lower down the order, Snehal R, a 27-year-old lecturer from Maharani’s College, has secured the 789th rank on her sixth attempt.

Sheer determination

Speaking about her persistence, Snehal said: “Sheer determination coupled with the persistent support of my parents and my uncle has propelled me to achieve this.”

Her sixth attempt since 2007 has given her the much-needed confidence to attempt the exam again for better ranking. “With the current trend, I am expecting a posting in IRS. I will definitely be giving my seventh attempt to secure an IAS or IFS cadre posting,” a calm, but elated, Snehal affirmed.

Shirish Kamble (846), who is working at the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO), hails from Chikkodi taluk in Belgaum district and is the son of an anganwadi teacher. “Being from the villages, I know what the conditions are like. None of the schemes ever reach the villagers. The conditions of the SCs are even worse. They do not have land and suffer from many problems. I always felt I could help them,” Shirish said.Determined to get into IAS, Shirish plans to write the exams again.

It was only a matter of time for Satish G (768), an excise inspector from Srinivaspura, who had made it to the interviews in his last two attempts. “I was working and studying at the same time and it was really difficult to spare time. This was my childhood dream and I did not want to give it up. Now with God’s grace, I have made it,” Satish said.

While the numbers clearing the examinations have increased, the rankings have disappointed many. Tutors at Himalai and Universal Coaching in Bangalore, indicated that more students were opting to study from Bangalore, as compared to earlier trends, when Delhi and Hyderabad were the preferred places to prepare for civil services.
