Azim Premji University, one of the two private varsities in the State, will organise an international conference on law, governance and development at The Energy and Research Institute (TERI), Domlur on May 18 and 19.

The theme for the conference is “Indian Legal System Reform: Empirical Baselines and Normative Frameworks”. The university’s Law, Governance and Development Initiative (LGDI) seeks to investigate and reconfigure the understanding of governance problems in India, and relocate legal system reform as a central element of governance reform in the country, a press release from the University said.

The conference will encourage informed debate on the central issues of legal system reform in India, organised around various panel themes such as legal system reforms, civil justice reforms, criminal justice reforms, alternative dispute resolution, reforming the appellate courts, institutions for legal system reform, etc.

The LGDI was established in 2010 to analyse the relationship between development and governance with a special focus on the structure and practices of government and the constitutive and instrumental role of the legal system.

It has already undertaken four large-scale research projects, including one on the functioning of the Karnataka Lokayukta in the past 15 years and the lessons from the findings on any future model of a centralised Lokpal.
