Last Updated 17 June 2012, 16:59 IST

A 35-year-old female elephant is battling for life as it was shot by a person at Kalachanahalli under Periyapatna forest range on Sunday.

It is said that the elephant, which strayed into a farm in the village, was shot to drive it away — but the bullet hit its head, injuring it seriously. The jumbo which staggered for a distance fell unconscious.

Range forest officer M S Chinnappa, along with his team arrived at the spot upon receiving information and provided treatment.

Veterinarian Dr Umashankar treated the elephant. As the jumbo sustained injuries on its forehead, it is said that the chances of its survival are less.

A case has been registered against Prabhakar Hegde, who shot the jumbo with the Hunsur police by the forest department. DFO Keshav, ACF Basavaraju, RFO  Chinnappa and others visited the spot.
